Best of Books by the Bed #1 is the first in what will be an annual collection of guest posts from the Books by the Bed weekly series on the We Wanted to Be Writers blog. Eric first conceived the idea for the series while doing the interviews with Iowa Workshop classmates for We Wanted to Be Writers. He asked them what books they had at bedside for a little late-night reading, and turned their responses into boxed inserts sprinkled throughout the book. It soon became clear that readers love knowing what other book fans are reading, especially those who also write.
So the Books by the Bed series was an organic byproduct of a book about the creative process and what makes writers tick. It grew unbidden from a whim one writer thought would be interesting to include in such a book.
We’ve been inviting writers to submit their bedside stashes—with a little about why they occupy that prime real estate—ever since. Not surprisingly, virtually everyone who has written one of these guest posts has expressed gratitude for the opportunity and commented on how fun it was to write. Booklovers are the finest kind of folks: smart and generous, empathic and curious. We applaud their impulse to share the written word and invite you to pass it on.
