The first edition of Lapidus/Fontainebleau, which we published in 2008, helped launch BrightCity Books. We produced it to mark the grand reopening of Fontainebleau resort in Miami Beach after a major remodel. This third edition has been expanded and updated, and includes nearly 60 photos and an essay by art and culture critic Dave Hickey on the legacy of the resort’s original architect, Morris Lapidus, and how his original designs influenced the remodel.
Lapidus/Fontainebleau is a constantly-in-demand item at the luxury hotel’s gift shop, and claims a place of honor in VIP guests’ welcome baskets. The singular vision and enduring popularity of the architect who defied expectations, and the architecture critics at The New York Times, is the stuff of compelling fiction. But in the case of Lapidus, all the glitz and bow tie tiles are real. We are indebted to his son and family estate for helping us share this little-known tale of American ingenuity.
